The Coalition of Songwriter & Music Organizations
The COSMO coalition has been organized to create a large chorus of voices from the many small community organizations that because of their smaller budgets and more limited pool of manpower and resources, encounter difficulty in raising funds and creating awareness.
COSMO represents one approach that should prove effective: Organize! Combine our numbers, pool our interests and thereby together cast a larger shadow, create a bigger wave, project a more imposing image.
Just as other products and services providers have formed “boards” or “associations,” music too is a product and those who create music are the providers or producers. And so, we as music providers and service organizations are worthy of an association—a coalition to promote, advance, advocate and help further our financial and mission successes.
Our COSMO mission is to act on behalf of our community nonprofit and education-based member organizations as well as on behalf of independent music producers and publishing artists, to promote awareness, recognize achievement and to advocate, represent, support and assist in the success and advancement of us all.
Whereas individually, our presence is small, collectively, our organizations, friends and supporters number in the 100s. Taken all together, the combined presence of COSMO organizations and COSMO “Friends,” number in the thousands, and reach a database of over 200,000.
The purpose of COSMO is to be a resource to its music community members, to raise funds for their efforts, to sponsor non-competitive events to promote and benefit all members and in general, to capitalize on our combined strengths. The nonprofit COSMO organization will be a public benefit corporation that will allow it to be a promotions and advocacy organization that can act to the benefit of its songwriters, musicians and music organization members, to seek major foundation grants, corporate contributions and advertiser sponsorships.
COSMO will not compete directly with its member organizations; nor detract from their individual identity or independent operations. COSMO is not an “umbrella” or a quarterback; we’re more like a sideline coach; we are not a superstructure; we may be a part of the foundation.
Organization:
COSMO will appoint several Officer/Emissaries to share the non-paid workload, and we will actively seek a nonprofit formation grant that will allow the retaining of a paid Executive Director.

Proposed activities include:
- Writing, presenting and administrating grants and major donor benefit programs.
- Formulating, presenting and coordinating major corporate and product advertising sponsorship campaigns.
- Planning and producing special events, where the proceeds and benefits inure to the membership.
