Why are our neighbors to the north important to our success? We (The lower 48) can’t just sit back and be passive when it comes to exploitation and revenue in Canada. We will host an all Canadian panel of representatives from the various music sectors. They will bring us vital insight in how we can maximize our working relationship with the Canadian music industry. Music is a global business and cooperation with our music friends next door can offer some great opportunities.

MODERATOR: Teri Nelson Carpenterm, President, Reel Muzik Werks, LLC and Two-Term Past President, CCC

Ms. Carpenter served as Senior Vice President, Saban Music Group. In this capacity, Ms. Carpenter was responsible for overseeing Saban’s music business. Previously, she was Senior Vice President, Music Administration for Fox Family Worldwide, and prior to that, for Saban Entertainment, Inc. Ms. Carpenter has been an integral part of the Saban music operations since 1995.  Before joining Saban, Ms. Carpenter served as a Music Administration & Production Executive at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.  Prior to that, she was the Director of Music at Academy Award Winning Indie Company, Hemdale Film Corporation.  Ms. Carpenter began her career at Broadcast Music Inc. in Film/TV relations.  Ms. Carpenter recently served as a two term President, and has been a long time board member of the California Copyright Conference.  Ms. Carpenter holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance and Composition from Cal State Long Beach where she graduated with honors.  She has performed under the direction of the renowned vocal conductor Frank Pooler and in concert with Richard Carpenter and Symphony Orchestras across Southern California.

Paul Spurgeon   Vice President, Legal Services & General Counsel

With over three decades as a lawyer in the music business, Paul Spurgeon is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Copyright Society of the U.S.A., and the American Federation of Musicians. He has also served as a member of the Copyright Legislation Committees (Policy) of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and the Canadian Bar Association. Previously, Paul served as Legal Counsel to CAPAC, one of SOCAN’s predecessors, and as a law clerk to the Chief Judge of the County and District Courts of Ontario. In 1988, he was elected to the Legal Committee of CISAC and served as its Chair for several years, currently serving as its vice-Chair. He has appeared before the Copyright Board, the Federal Court of Canada, the Supreme Court of Canada, the CRTC, and various parliamentary committees. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Law and the Richard Ivey School of Business Executive Program of the University of Western Ontario, Canada.

Gino Olivieri started his career in 1976 as a Mobile DJ (1976 through 1997). Worked in a record shop (“Disco Library”) from 1984 to 1987. In 1987, he crafted his sales and promotion skills for Unidisc until 1989. Working part time for Numuzik Inc. from 1986 to 1988 and in 1989 until 1997, working full time as Head A&R and Dance Buyer. David Weitzman, Senior Director, Business Development & Operations, Olé -

David Weitzman has joined the ole Los Angeles team as Director, Business Development. David brings to ole over 15 years of experience in the music business ranging from A&R and radio promotion to digital music development and distribution to music supervision.

Over the last eight years, David has been music supervisor on a wide variety of programs including Party Monsters for E! Networks; Rob and Big, Runs House, Yo Mama and Wildboyz for MTV Networks; Victoria Beckham Coming to America for NBC Networks; Jackass the Movie for Paramount Pictures; High School Reunion for WB Burbank; and many Indie projects.

David has also acted as music supervisor for advertising campaigns for L.A. Fitness, Virgin TV, Mars Bars, NASCAR Fox, Clairol, Virgin Air, WPYC Team Russia, HSBC China, Microsoft Rhapsody and Safeway.

A graduate of California State University, David’s realm of music supervisory and advertising experience broaches numerous genres; which experience will continue to assist in the growth of ole and its bandwidth across the industry.

J.P. (John-Paul) Ellson, Chair, Canadian Council of Music Associations (CCMIA)

John-Paul Ellson is the Chair of the Canadian Council of Music Industry Associations (CCMIA), representing ten (10) provincial and territorial music industry associations with a combined registered and affiliated membership in excess of 8,000 artists and music industry entrepreneurs. Since 2008, Ellson has also served as Chair of the National Advisory Board of the Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent On Recordings (FACTOR), which is responsible for distributing Government of Canada funding for sound recording artists across Canada in accordance with adjudicated jury processes. From 1998 to the present, Ellson has been Saskatchewan legal counsel for the Directors Guild of Canada. Ellson was the producer of “Canada’s Diversity Awards,” in 2009, and was directly involved in the production of the 2007 JUNO Awards, the 2007 Canadian Country Music Awards, the 2007 Western Canadian Music Awards, the 2007 Gemini Awards and the 2008 Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival. Currently, as COO and in-house legal counsel to SaskMusic, he operates a pro-bono legal services program for sound recording artists and professionals throughout the Province  of Saskatchewan
