About Your Hosts: John and JoAnn Braheny
John Braheny is a top consultant/coach for songwriters and music industry entrepreneurs and a music journalist. His best selling book, The Craft and Business of Songwriting, (now in its 3rd edition and in pdf ). has sold over 80,000 copies and is widely recognized as the songwriters “bible.” (See reviews at www.johnbraheny.com)
John’s music career has taken him from classical violinist to solo folk performer to songwriter and recording artist and commercial jingle composer/producer. He and Len Chandler founded the legendary Los Angeles Songwriters Showcase, (1971-1996) a national non-profit songwriters organization that provided education and discovery opportunities for countless songwriters including Warren Zevon, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsay Buckingham, Stephen Bishop and Diane Warren, the most successful contemporary songwriter,
John co-hosted Samm Brown’s For the Record, the Los Angeles music industry radio talk show on KPFK-FM, for several years. He’s been president of the California Copyright Conference and has served on the boards of the Recording Academy (The Grammy Organization) and the National Academy of Songwriters. He’s taught songwriting and music business classes at a variety of schools including Musicians Institute and UCLA Extension and conducts seminars for colleges and organizations throughout the country.
From 1998-2005 he interviewed 55 hit songwriters and producers for United Airlines In-flight Entertainment audio channels. He’s also a screener and consultant for TAXI.com, the world’s top independent A&R company. For more details visit his very informative Web site at www.johnbraheny.com. All the above experiences and contacts have given John a unique overview of the music industry.
JoAnn Braheny’s career started as Atlanta’s first full-time female radio D.J.. She honed her skills doing on-air interviews with Dennis Hopper, Peter Max, Harry Chapin, Otto Preminger, Sen. Ted Kennedy and others. She was lured from broadcasting to Top 40 promotion for GRC Records. Her D.J. experience and being a woman in a (then) male-dominated business gave her an unexpected advantage calling on national radio music directors. JoAnn was soon drafted into the music publishing division working with songwriters and their creative process. Assisting songwriters with their career development became a passion, so much so that when GRC closed, JoAnn opened her own consulting and music publishing company. As owner of Jaffe Music Consulting she provided ongoing career direction to new and veteran songwriters, and worked with record producers and recording artists. During that time she became a founding officer of the Atlanta Songwriters Association.
When JoAnn met her husband, John Braheny, music business consultant and Co-founder/Director of the Los Angeles Songwriters Showcase, she moved to Los Angeles and continued working in the entertainment industry. She temped regularly at Billboard magazine, CBS Records, Arista Records, Warner Bros. Studios, ATV Music Publishing, Island Music, ABC-TV, NBC-TV, Dick Clark Productions, The Burbank Studios, the Playboy Mansion and various entertainment law and management firms.
JoAnn worked full time for Rogers & Cowan Public Relations as a liaison between their international celebrities and music clients and the entertainment press and media.
JoAnn’s history of working with creative people took a new turn when she was hired by the Talent Development department of Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), the famed think-tank that creates Disney’s theme parks. She designed and implemented a computer tracking system that provided instant access to the myriad of creative skills found at WDI. This database, created via one-on-one interviews with hundreds of Disney artists, cataloging their skills, preferences and work styles, is still utilized in the areas of career path work and team-building. She worked with and apprenticed with the top experts in the field of creativity.
JoAnn currently is a creative career counselor, available for one-on-one sessions as well as creative process seminars for musicians, artists, and songwriters. She also presents management-level workshops for companies, organizations and schools, in Los Angeles, St. Louis, Kansas City, Nashville, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Rochester, N.Y., Phoenix, Eugene, Oregon, Sacramento, Palo Alto, Austin, Denver, Boston, New Haven, San Diego, Bismarck, Vancouver, B.C., Bermuda, Salt Lake City, Houston, Oklahoma City and Honolulu.
